Scope and Content This shows the rear elevation of the redeveloped 232-234 Canongate, Edinburgh. This block, previously occupied by a series of 18th-century tenements, was redeveloped by Robert Hurd & Partners in 1958-66 during a major restoration and redevelopment of Chessel's Court to the rear. This block retained the four storeys of the original tenement, but the arcaded ground floor was opened up to provide access through to Chessel's Court. Part of 234 Canongate (left) retains the pantiled roof while the rest is tiled but the whole block is cream-rendered. All windows are single-paned rather than the traditional multi-paned sash and case style found elsewhere on the Canongate. This rear elevation has some balconetted windows, and one bay of angled windows in the corner where the building turns south into the courtyard.
