Administrative History Audrey Henshall (born 1927, Oldham, Lancashire) is a British archaeologist noted for her “major and outstanding contribution, of solid and enduring worth, to British prehistoric studies” (Piggot), and particularly for her work on Scottish chambered cairns, prehistoric pottery, and early textiles. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, she graduated with an MA in 1949, and from 1960 to 1971 acted as Assistant Keeper of Archaeology at the National Museum of Scotland, as well as Assistant Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland from 1970. “Chambered Tombs of Scotland” Volumes I & II, her seminal works on chambered cairns published in 1963 and 1972, sought to provide full and comprehensive surveys and analysis of all known Scottish chambered tombs and associated structures, functioning as a “convenient reference book”, and now regarded as a classic work upon the subject. She has since co-authored four more books on chambered cairns in the north of Scotland, and produced pivotal articles on prehistoric pottery which can be found in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquities of Scotland (volumes 84 and 114). Henshall has also made a major contribution to the field of early textiles - her studies of the Gunnister Man’s clothing, and early tartan patterns found at Dungiven, are considered to be some of her most interesting and pivotal works. Henshall was the subject of honour of a Festschrift published in 1992, and in 1993 she was awarded an OBE for services to archaeology.
