Scope and Content These two five-storeyed tenements at 266-272 Canongate are located near the junction with St Mary's Street, High Street and Jeffrey Street. There has been a tenement on this site since the 18th century, as can be seen from John Ainslie's map of 1780, with Bell's Close and Boyd's Close marked as being in existence by then. The current properties were probably redeveloped during the course of the late 19th century. The tenement at 266 and 268 Canongate (right) has a single-storeyed extension to the rear elevation. This may originally have been the washhouse and water closets for the tenements prior to improvement works to bring facilities inside. The main feature of note within this block is in fact a painted tile mural within the shop at 270. Formerly a fish shop, this mural shows a fishing boat coming to berth alongside a wooden pier. These tiles probably date from the late 19th century when Croan's Fishmongers was established in the Canongate. The shop operated here until 1991, but the tiled mural remains in situ. The boat is believed to be the Mary Croan, and has a Leith registration (LH99), and the name Croan is on a fishing box on the pier.
