Scope and Content Dating from 1886, Milton House Primary School was built to designs by Edinburgh School Board's Chief Architect, Robert Wilson (1834-1901). This two-storeyed building also has a basement level to the rear (south) elevation, with a symmetrical eleven-bayed front elevation. The central bay is topped by a bellcote above crowstepped gables. There are red sandstone dressings to the windows, projecting stringcourse below the first floor, and this carved pedimented date panel with a roundel depicting St Margaret of Scotland above the first-floor windows in the central bay. Between the ground and first floors in the central bay, the inscription 'MILTON HOUSE PUBLIC SCHOOL' can still be made out. The stone-mullioned winsdows are large to let in as much natural light to the classrooms as possible, and all retain the timber-framed, multi-paned sash and case design. Now known as Royal Mile Primary School (also previously known as Canongate Primary School), the school stands on the site of Milton House, which was built to designs by John Adam (1721-92) in 1755-8, for noted judge, Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton (1692-1766). Four large landscape panels from the original Milton House, by French painter William Delacour (1700-67) and dating from 1758, can be found on the central stair of the school.
