Scope and Content Originally dating from 1624, this townhouse was rebuilt in 1954 by Robert Philip Andrew Hurd (1905-63), though incorporating some original stonework and reusing some inscribed lintels above the entrance door. The footprint of the original building was replicated, with the recessed crowstep-gabled stairtower (right) and the projecting oriel (left). Many other traditional fveatures were incorporated into the rebuild, including the tall crowstepped gable over the main section of the building, the rubble stonework throughout and the sash and case windows. The reused lintel's Latin inscriptions translates as: 'O Lord I put my trust in thee, let nothing work me harm'. The original townhouse was the home of Sir John Nisbet, Lord Dirleton (c.1609-1687), a Judge of the Court of Session and renowned anti-Covenanter. He bought the estate of Dirleton, East Lothian in 1663 and had Archerfield House built within this estate sometime during the late 17th century.
