Scope and Content This unusually-shaped tenement was reconstructed in 1965-7 by Robert Hurd & Partners, as part of a major redevelopment of the section of Canongate from 202-254. Built on the footprint of the original tenement, it retains the canted corner to the east (left). Unlike the adjoining tenement, which was redeveloped by Ebenezer J MacRae in 1931 as part of an earlier redevlopment scheme, this tenement has small single-paned windows, rather than the traditional multi-paned sash and case at 206-8 (right). However, the stonework has been replicated to match in with that at 206-8 Canongate. Although much of Canongate retains its historic burgh street layout and much of its traditional Scottish burgh architecture, there has in fact been several redevelopment schemes during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Most of these redevelopment schemes were implemented in an effort to improve living conditions within Canongate, which had become insanitary and excessively overcrowded due to the nature of tenement living in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Earlier schemes tended to follow the appearance of vernacular architetural style, while some later developments began to insert contemporary architecture onto the historic street, such as the Sir Basil Spence development at Brown's Close further east, past Canongate Kirk.
