Scope and Content This five-bayed, three-storeyed plus attic tenement at 168-172 Canongate was built in 1876, and comprises traditional shop fronts at ground-floor level with flats above. Built in Scots Baronial style, it demonstrates features of this style: crowstepped gable to the central chimneystack, slight corbelling to the attic floor, and traditional gabled dormers topped by rose finials in the outer bays. The shop fronts have shouldered architraved mouldings around both window and door openings, encasing large plate glass windows. The chimneystacks to east and west have been rebuilt during restoration work by Iain Gordon Lindsay (1906-66) in 1965. Canongate has seen several phases of rebuilding during the 19th and 20th centuries, but has maintained its traditional Scottish burgh street layout, and many of the replacement tenements were built in the style of earlier tenements but with much-improved facilities in the flats.
