Scope and Content This shows the central bay of the mid-19th-century, three-storeyed tenement at 154-166 Canongate. This tenement has shops at ground-floor level, and this central arched pend leading to Sugarhouse Close to the rear. This central bay has a two-storeyed oriel window at first and second floor which projects on stone brackets above the central pend. The crowstepped gable above is topped with a star-shaped finial. There is a carved panel between first and second floors which comprises a lion rampant in a shield with thistles on either side and 'PRO REGE' (for King') below.
