Scope and Content Sugarhouse Close in depicted and named on several 18th century maps and although the accuracy of drawn maps varies and Canongate has been remodelled significantly since the 18th century, Sugarhouse Close did indeed contain a sugar works from 1752. William Edgar's Map of 1763 (City and Castle of Edinburgh) depicts a 'Sugar Work House ' as 'Q' on the map and John Ainslie's City of Edinburgh map of 1780 shows 'Sugar House Close' with an isolated building in the backland. The actual sugar works would have been in a separate building (of stone) due to the fire hazard. The white-painted buildings seen to the left and right on entering the close from Canongate are the 19th century offices of the brewery established here in 1868 (Holyrood Brewery) until the late 20th century. The brewery buildings seen here to the south (at NT26462 73691) have been incorporated into student accommodation by Oberlanders (2012). This view looks towards the masonry brewery buildings incorporated into the design. The use of brick with the timber cladding on the surrounding student accommodation is reminiscent of the medieval backland jettied buildings such as can be seen in Bakehouse Close to the east.
