Oblique aerial view.

B 46610

Description Oblique aerial view.

Date 1990

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number B 46610

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 349446, SC 1731137

Scope and Content Castle Greg, West Lothian This well-preserved fortlet lies just to the south of the summit of Camilty Hill. Its existence suggests the presence of a minor Roman road to the west of the Pentland Hills, though no such road has yet been found. Two ditches define the outer extent of the fortlet, and surround the rampart which still stands to a height of 1m. The entrance through the rampart is on the east side. Fortlets such as this probably housed between 50-80 men, in one or two barrack blocks. Soldiers would likely have been deployed from a nearby fort on a regular basis.
