All Other 551 406/8/1 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 1 - Light purple linen bound cover, with black fabric strap. Bound markings of strap on linen, plus water damage and signs of wear. Spine faded, suggests horizontal storage for long period of time. Signed 'James Lochhead, Carick Park, Ayr.' Much seems to have either fallen out or cut out. Loose sheets. Hand numbered pages. Bigger notebook, simpler in comparison to Entry 2. Drawing paper. Short amount of material. c. 1884 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/2 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 2 - Pale vanilla linen bound cover, broken strap on back. On front: 'James Lochhead, 64 Cochrane St, Glasgow.' Much finer pen and ink style, more personal sketch book. Address is next to Glasgow City Chambers. Sketches of fireplace and tower. New sanitary chambers, dated 16/10/1894, full sketch - refrigerating in Glasgow - ice stacked in side of the wall. Another sketch dated to 21/07/1894. Postcard inserted, photograph of William Wallace's statue in Aberdeen, with sketch of towerhouse on reverse side. Pen and Ink painting. Glued in photograph of St Michael's Priory, Linlithgow, - probably South porch. Mirrored by own sketch of the porch. Inserted clipping about ventilation. c. 21/7/1894 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/3 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 3 - Heavily worn black laminate cover, inscribed with templar crosses in each corner. Spine heavily damaged and seam split. 'Notes on Building Materials' written in white paint across front (thin brush, cracked paint). Inside signed by 'James Lochhead, 63 Mill ___, Ayr.' First page is inventory of book, which includes Lochhead's own notes on different building materials. Thorough account of architectural materials. Poor condition: discoloured, coming away from seam. Book appears to have fallen apart at some stage; pages in wrong order and upside down. Loose. Small drawing of Classical temple-esque structure at back. c. 1895 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/4 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 4 - Linen bound cover, painted black. Heavily worn, vertical fold, corners folded, oxidised where stapled. Lined notepad, signed 'Alexander Cullen, Architect, Motherwell, June 1894.' In worse condition than other notebooks, heavy fold damage vertically. Fingerprints definitely indicate more viewed pages. Lot of work on Parish Church. Staples heavily eroded and oxidised at seam. Ends 1896. In much worse condition than other notebooks. 6/1894 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/5 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 5 - Heavily worn linen bound cover, painted matt black. Much of paint either worn or peeled away, shows linen underneath. Fold damage, but spine in decent condition except for fold up near bottom. Smaller notebook, handsigned front page: 'Alex Cullen Architect Hamilton' Small symbol (doodle) and dated 16th Sept 1895. Hamilton Parish Church. Much smaller, rougher free-hand drawings. John Lightbidy's shop. Drawings dated 27th March and 4th April 1896. Ground survey in Hamilton for YMCA 22nd May 1896. Further YMCA work, including building plans and sketches. Maybe used just for this project? Seems restricted to a few projects. Jumps forward to 1900. Lots of smudge and finger marks over railway survey - used a lot, a plan that went through, or used on site by workmen? Becomes more sporadic later in diary, with random later dates and one-off plans. Flips over near back; most of this used for mathematics. 16/9/1895 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/6 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 6 - Blac laminate cover, heavily worn and scuffed with discolouration on front. No markings on cover. SIgned front page 'Alex Cullen, Architect, Hamilton, _____ Oct 1898.' Heavily damaged, spine nearly removed, large fold through centre of pages horizontally. In pencil next to name appears to be written 'Tribal' - joke? Pages loose. Larkhall co-op society. House at Cambusland for Jay Caldwell MP 23rd April 1900. Rowan Tree Inn - still exists. Must have gone through the books - one for a maunfacturing mill in Hamilton, 11/01, has 'cancelled' written in a differnt hand next to it. c. 18/10/1898 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/7 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 7 - Linen bound cover, originally black but lighter through water damage. Seam bound in maroon fabric, heavily damaged and torn/worn at both edges. No marking on cover. Smaller notebook, signed 'Alex Cullen, architect, Hamilton.' Underneath '______ chambers, Glasgow.' Small drawing, maybe road underneath. Working on quite grand villa, 30th April 1903. More writing and written surveys than in other books. Furniture designs, inc star of David. Appears to be designing and furnishing room, drawings give plan context. Oxidised and rusted paper clip. Notes drawn on back of letter corner, apparently from the council. Up to 1905, poss even 1908. Appears to have sketched in potential logo, or was just doodling. c. 30/4/1903 Sub-Group Level

Strap removed, pencil holder remains. One end of strap held in by pin. Torn at edges. Centre left front, faded black writing, 'SKETCH BOOK NO. 1'; different hand. Front upper right, '1901-04.' Battered condition. Greenfield and Strathaven School suverys. To do list. Masonic temple in Hamilton. Letter from Colin McAndrew & Partners, Edinburgh inserted. Very worn, tears in corners. Crease damage in linen. Red paint stain. Front upper left, hand-painted thin black, different hand. Reads 'SKETCH BOOK, No.2, 1901-04 (underlined).' Stains and fingermarks on front and back. Scuffs. Front upper centre, black thin, 'Sketch Book.' Underneath 'No.11' scribbled out, replaced by large painted bold '4.' Above writing, painted '1904-06.' 'Alex Cullen Architect' in front page. More floral writing. Pub plans. Insert with financial details of lease and rental costs for a property. Heavily damaged cover, scuffed and paint. Print label, 'Alex Cullen . . .August 1905.' Very rough drawings, sparesly spaced. Cut out page, detailed drawing of Chapelstaff Police Station. Reasonable condition, linen mostly undamaged except for wear, few black stains and central vertical crease damage. Spine good. Front upper right, bold black writing, 'No.6, 1907-_'; scuffing at right outer edge removes number. Possibly 09. Mostly ground plans. Upper right: original marking scribbled out, replaced underneath with 'No.7;' underneath italicised '1909-10.' Handpainted page numbers in corners. Pages cut out. Uddingston measurements for Park. Decent condition. Frontage plan for 'The Queen's Cafe.' Date ranges further than that on the cover. Levels on Hamilton Golf Course. Strathaven Police Station. 1/4/1908 Sub-Group Level

Crosses out things he has drawn. Bellshill Police Stations and levels for new academy in Hamilton. Sketch of Bothwel Bridge. John Lightbody's propery surveyed again. All Other 551 406/8/16 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 16 - Brown linen cover. Strap remains, pencil holder does not. Wear and tear, particularly on spine which shows sign of use. 'No.9, 1910-13' written in bold black in top right corner; different hand to the other books. Pages fallingout, not attached to spine. Signed by Alex Cullen, Aug 1910. Some very rough drawings, presumably drawn on-the-job. Entry early on dated 23/6/27 (or 21, possibly), signed J. Jeffreyl (sic). Next by Lochead. Every page has page number scribbled out due to early numbering mistake. Repeated drawing and re-calculation of same building, roughly done, unnamed. All Other 551 406/8/17 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 17 - Brown linen cover with brown strap. 'Sketch Book No. 10' written in black on right side. Above this 'Sep..1911. - Jan. 1914.' in thinner writing. Has address for C, L & B listed at Brandon Chambers, likely around time of Alex Cullen's death. Interior designs inc chairs, cabinets, doorways, tables, fireplace, pew. J Mc G did a lot of the drawings in this book. Dimensions of housing schemes into lists and grander plans. Some pages particularly grubby with finger-prints - did they receive extensive viewing later? Insert with additions to a plan within notebook. 9/1911 Sub-Group Level

'SKETCH BOOK NO. 11' in top right corner, black bold. Above is 'JAN 1912-1919' in thinner writing. Individually numbered pages. Plans for Blantyne Co-op building, eventually built. Inserts from other notebooks regarding surveyed church, inc an advertisement for a mixture that makes cement waterproof. Features index to sketches at back of the book; must presume that sketch-books would be referenced at a later date. Sketchbook no. 2 written at back. 20/1/1912 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/19 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 19 - Brown linen cover. Pencil holder and strap still attached. Few scuffs, bit of staining, otherwise good condition. In black bold, top right corner 'SKETCH BOOK No. 12.' Above in thinner writing (italic) 'MAY 1913-1919). May 1913-1919 written on front. Small survey of subway. Full page inventory at back of the book, presumably done at completion. Confirms that notebooks were used to look back at. 'Upside down' at many points. Runs in reverse order - 82 first page, 2 last. 15th May 1913 earliest entry, church in Coatbridge. Auction house designs and measurements. All Other 551 406/8/20 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 20 - Brown linen cover. Strap torn off, but pencil holder remains on top lip. 'SKETCH BOOK NO. 14' on right side, bold black writing. Above is 'May 1914-19,' written in thinner black ink. Surveys, offices, Tram Accidents, architectural and ground plans, 'Burnside Special Open Air School for Cripple Children.' Mainly locations around Hamilton area, but also Motherwell and Bellshill, Glasgow, poss Strathaven. Gaps of months between each drawing, but appear to be in chronological order. Appears to have had extra pages added to it. Interior designs, safe boxes. Gretna township. Appear to just have dipped into it and picked up when needed. Latest date recorded is 5th May 1924. 5/1914 Sub-Group Level
All Other 551 406/8/21 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 21 - Brown linen cover. Strap not attached. Cover grubby but in decent condition. Slight hole in spine. 'No.16, 1914-1919' written in black ink on right side front cover. No.14 written on title page. Several pages of full street surveys with tramlines marked in red. Another page with location of a team accident. Surveying ways to stop the accident, or removal of the lines themselves? Survey for Lanarkshire Tramways Co. Surveyed pole to see if caused accident. Worn and battered cover, with tears and town seam. On back: 'James Lochhead, Brandon Chamber, Hamilton.' Signed 'Alex Cullen Lochhead and Brown, architect, Hamilton' dated 1915-, on front says 1915-1919. Unknown signature side-on at edge of page; James ____ Mill? Less sure free-hand than other books - apprentice? Extra pages inserted with gaffa tape. Designs for railway station at Bridgeton Cross - lots of smudge marks. All Other 551 406/8/23 CULLEN LOCHHEAD AND BROWN NOTEBOOK 23 - Light brown linen cover, different to others but notebook appears the same. Grease and thumbmarks, general wear, but overly good condition. Centre-left, hollow italised black ink, underlined 'SKETCH BOOK NO. ___ 1922-25.' Original number scribbled out, unintelligible, 22 written underneath in different hand. Lower right front corner, smaller font, italicised 'Alex Cullen Lochhead & Brown, Architects, Brandon Chambers, Hamilton.' Different hand to other books; wonder if previous ordered in bulk and they used up supply? Pencil holder remains on back; book appears to have been filled in wrong-way round & upside down. Scribbled out original number on cover, replaced by 22. 1922-25 on cover. Full inventory at back. Extensive sketches for Hamilton town hall, 'for colour scheme.'
