On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174871 Bowl and base of a mariner's compass made of poplar (DP97/A035, A050). The bowl is fitted with copper-alloy gimbals, while the base has a lead stabilising weight and copper-alloy pin for the magnetic needle. Traces of fabric from a cloth case adhere to the outer surfaces of bowl and base. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174872 Compass base (DP00/016) with lead stabilising weight and copper-alloy pin for the magnetic needle. At some stage, perhaps during manufacture, the base has developed a serious crack which has been repaired by the insertion of a thin wooden shim held in place by two copper-alloy 'dogs' – tapered staples which pulled the two sides tightly together. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174873 Lower valve body and claque weight (DP97/A013) for a common suction-pump. The leather claque or flapper is missing. Concretions show the position of the iron stirrup by which the valve could be hooked and removed for inspection. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174874 Lower valve body and weighted leather claque (DP97/A009) for a common suction-pump. Concretions show the position of the iron stirrup by which the valve could be hooked and removed for inspection. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174875 Lower valve body and weighted leather claque (DP99/023) for a common suction-pump. Concretions and holes show the position of the iron stirrup by which the valve could be hooked and removed for inspection. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174876 (Left) a lower common suction-pump barrel with its valve in place from Port Eynon (SW Wales) (after Wilkinson et al., Post-Medieval Archaeology 32 (1998), Fig. 11) (redrawn by Colin Martin). (Right) diagrammatic representation of a common suction-pump lower valve showing its leather claque, wooden claque weight, and iron stirrup. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174877 Left, complete spear and valve head (DP92/046) from a burr pump. The hole at the upper end is for the brake or pump-handle. Scale 50 centimetres. The detail on the right, with a 5cm scale, shows the conical valve head, and below it is a reconstruction (after T. Oertling, Ships' Bilge Pumps, 1996, Fig. 3) showing the umbrella-like leather valve attached to it. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174878 Barrel or cask ends. DP97/A023, two conjoining pieces with pegs constituting nearly half of the circumference. Original diameter 42cm. Two peg-holes in the lower board, which carries the initials 'R P' and has a spigot-hole. DP03/054b constitutes half of the circumference of a 37cm-diameter end and has indeterminate marks and two peg-holes. Second from bottom, outer board from an end 50cm in diameter, with two spigot-holes and indeterminate angular markings. Bottom, half of a broken centre board 24cm in diameter with indeterminate angular markings. Scale in centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174879 Pieces of barrel ends. DP01/027, outer segment from an end 60cm in diameter. Left centre, outer segment of an end 24cm in diameter. Right centre, outer segment of an end 38cm in diameter. DP96/002, half end 28cm in diameter. DP03/071, 073, two conjoining pieces making up a keg end 19cm in diameter. Scale 20 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174880 Staves from small buckets (flaring outwards from base) and a small tankard (flaring inwards). Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174881 Left: barrel stave. DP03/074a, 074b, and DP00/192 are staves from small kegs. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174882 Circular lid with locking-pin (DP03/047). A similar item from the Vasa is the lid of a staved butter cask, of a form reconstructed in DP174883. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174883 Reconstruction of a staved butter cask with a lid similar to DP174882. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174884 Wooden keg ends or possibly platters. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174885 Staved costrel (DP92/063) with monozylous master-stave incorporating neck. Scale 15 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174886 Staved tankard (DP99/010) wanting its hinged lid, capacity approximately 1 pint (0.57 litres). Scale 15 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174887 Lid for a staved tankard (DP97/A024). Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174888 Articulated run of three tenoned muntins (plus the broken edge of a fourth) and three associated panels (DP00/085). The shape of the assembly suggests that this was part of a panelled bulkhead, with the upper angle following the camber of the deck above and the outer angle reflecting the tumble-home of the hull. Wall-cladding of this quality is only likely to have been present in the captain's cabin at the upper stern. Scale 50 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174889 Complete framed and panelled door (DP00/146). The upper curve probably follows the camber of the deck above, while the low height of the door—1.44m—suggests that there was a substantial sill beneath it to prevent water entering the cabin during stormy weather. Panel-work of this quality is only likely to have been present in the captain's cabin at the upper stern. Scale 50 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174890 Staves from a small wooden bucket (DP92/DG08, DP97/A027) reconstructable as illustrated. A small round-headed punch has been used to create a simple pattern of dots on the outside. DP99/020 is a round base with a chamfered edge and a mark or initial apparently stamped on the bottom. It is of the right size to fit the bucket but was found elsewhere and may be from another vessel. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174891 A small framed and panelled cupboard door (DP99/004). Its top part is angled to match the upper angle of the panelling seen in DP174888, and may be part of the same assembly. The plank (DP99/013) with both its edges moulded is not slotted for panels, and may be from another part of the stern cabin's interior cladding. Scale 30 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174892 Lower part of a small framed and panelled door. Panel-work of this quality is only likely to have been present in the captain's cabin at the upper stern. Scale 30 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174893 Decorative mouldings which would have been fixed to the panel-work. They were made by gluing paper shims between three blocks of wood and turning the required shape. The three pieces were then separated, the centre discarded, and the two outer ones—which would have had not quite full semi-circular sections—were retained for use. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174894 Semi-circular carved wooden panel (DP00/081, 083) depicting the virtue of Hope as a draped female figure with her attributes of crow, oak trees, and anchor. Housings at the bottom corners suggest that this feature was mounted on pillars as a central feature in the stern decoration. Wooden carving of a classical warrior's head in profile (DP92/DG01). Wooden carving of a winged cherub or putto (DP92/169). Wooden carving showing the lower part of a moustachioed face with an elaborate head-dress (DP97/A025). Fragment of wooden carving (DP03/062). Scale 30 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
