On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174823 Wooden carriage (DP00/013) associated with the minion drake (Gun 8, DP00/203) recovered from the Duart Point wreck. The front axle and wheels are missing, but the rear of the carriage shows the much-eroded remnants of two solid runners or chocks, which helped to dampen the recoil of this kind of gun which, because of its light weight, had a violent 'kick'. Scale 50 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174824 A wooden cartridge-box restored from a surviving section (DP97/A009), with a reconstruction (not to scale) on the right. This container was used to carry bags (cartridges) of paper or linen packed with gunpowder from a secure store well below the waterline to the gun-deck during action. Such precautions minimised the risk of accidental explosions, particularly during the confusion of battle. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174825 Two conjoining segments (DP99/032, 076) from a wooden case filled with multiple projectiles for firing from a large-bore gun. Lead bullets were the normal load but iron nails or flints could also be used. Four such segments tied with cord around the grooves would have completed a cylinder. For a diagram showing the manufacturing and loading processes see DPline021. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174826 Detailed plan of the area in which finds associated with the minion drake (Gun 8, DP00/203) were located. Scale 1 metre. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174827 Small copper-alloy objects: Heart-shaped mounting or strap terminal (DP92/282); square buckle with pin (DP92/062); spectacle-type buckle without pin (DP92/257); spectacle-type buckle with pin (DP92/256); object of uncertain function (DP92/DG14); part of a hinge, perhaps from a folding rule (DP00/115); loop of fine braided wire with twisted join (DP00/010); sheet-metal object with raised central boss pierced by a hole and surrounded with embossed pellets topped by a crown (DP00/047). Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174828 Lead merchant's weights for use with pan scales. All carry embossed marks including a crowned 'C', the monogram of Charles I; the sword of London's Guildhall; and the Archangel Michael weighing souls in the balance, the emblem of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers. The weights in avoirdupois units are 4 pounds (DP97/A021), 1 pound (DP00/033), and 8 ounces (DP00/001). Scale 20 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174829 Beam balance or stater, from Niccolo Tartaglia, Quesiti et Inventioni Diverse (1546). (re-drawn by Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174830 Lead poise or sliding weight from a beam balance (DP97/A006). Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174831 Copper-alloy lock-plate (DP92/DG11) for a left-handed Scottish snaphaunce pistol by George Turner of Edinburgh (fl.1639-1660). Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174832 Detail redrawn from an etching in a series by Jacob de Gheyn, Drawing for the Exercise of Armes (1607), illustrating the drill for loading and firing a musket. This part of the procedure shows the bandolier with its wooden powder-boxes ('apostles') hanging on looped strings. The musketeer is thumbing open a charge preparatory to tipping it into the muzzle of his piece. Note that the arrangement keeps the lid securely attached to the string during this process. (re-drawn by Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174833 Wooden powder-boxes. DP00/079 is the detached lid of DP00/166, showing the holes in the T-shaped top lug through which a string loop passed, keeping the lid securely attached when opened during the loading process. The capacity of this box suggests that it was intended for a 12-bore musket charge, that is for a shot-weight of 12 to the pound. DP00/170, though its base is missing, seems to be of a similar size. DP01/015 and DP00/149 are rather smaller, and were probably intended for 14-bore shot. These suggestions are supported by the lead bullets recovered from the wreck, which show peaks at 12- and 14-bores. At the time the heavy 12-bore musket was being replaced by the lighter 14-bore. The two caps at bottom right (drawn after Marion O'Neill, PSAS 121 (1991), Illus 5) are from pewter powder-boxes of similar type, and come from a context associated with the Civil War period at Tantallon Castle, near Dunbar, East Lothian. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174834 Sword hilt and upper blade (DP92/178) reconstructed from X-ray images, the ornate gold- and silver-wound handle which was extracted complete from concretion, and negative impressions from within the concretion matrix. Right, an unopened concretion the shape of which suggests another handle of similar type. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174835 Pewter 'tappit hen' liquid measure of 1 Scots pint capacity, with the mark of the Edinburgh pewterer Robert Somervell and the date 1633 (when he was enrolled into the Incorporation of Hammermen) near its outer rim. A larger mark with the same initials is at the centre of the inside base. The initials 'G W P [or R] H' are stamped on the lid. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174836 Pewter 'tappit hen' liquid measure of Scots mutchkin capacity (DP01/131). No maker's mark is evident, but the letters 'I V' (or possibly 'I K') are cut on the top of the lid. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174837 Pear-shaped pewter flagon (DP79/001) with bulbous body. Indecipherable mark on handle. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174838 Pewter 'tappit hen' liquid measure of 1 Scots chopin capacity (DP03/063), with the mark of the Edinburgh pewterer John Harvie and the date 1643 (when he was enrolled into the Incorporation of Hammermen) near its outer rim. A larger mark with the same initials is at the centre of the inside base. The initials 'G W P [or R] H' are stamped on the lid. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174839 Pewter threaded bottle-top and engaged rim-clamp (DP01/132) for a glass square-bodied case-bottle of Dutch type. At the right is a similar top with its associated bottle (partly restored) from the wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman Kennemerland, lost on the Out Skerries of Shetland in 1664. Scale 5 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 174840 Clay pipes from the Duart Point wreck. All appear to be of English origin and of mid-17th-century date. Five have a heart-shaped impression on their flat heels bearing the initials 'NW'. Though the name of this maker is not known, the distribution of his mark is almost exclusively confined to the Newcastle area. Newcastle was the main supply-base for Cromwellian operations in the north during the 1650s and several sites in Scotland, including Duart, have produced examples of this stamp. It may, therefore, be seen as a marker of the Cromwellian supply-chain. Other marks in the collection (DP00/072a, which seems to depict a harp, and DP01/060a) have not been identified. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) Item Level
