Scope and Content Watch tower and road at White Type, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman watch tower stands on the shoulder of White Type Hill. Part of the circular ditch can still be seen on the ground. A Roman road runs nearby, and the soldiers based at the tower would have observed traffic along it to the SE and NW. This is an aerial view of the site. The circular ditch which surrounded the watch tower can be seen in the centre of the image. The ditch was about 1.7 m wide with an entrance in the E side. This faces the Roman road, 30 m away. The site was first discovered through aerial photography in 1939, and was located on the ground in 1940. It is possibly Antonine in date.
