Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. During the mid-20th century, a series of small-scale local authority housing developments were built around Rothesay, during a period when upgrading living accommodation was going through a boom. These two blocks of flats at 1-8 Bannatyne Mains Road are unusually positioned with their front elevation facing inland. Each block of four flats has a central entrance within a plain canopied porch, though the entrance doors have interesting, typical 1950s glazing patterns. Both blocks have been refurbished, with new harling applied and modern double glazing replacing the original windows which were probably iron-framed.
