Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. Probably built around the 1950s, this house at 37A Castle Street was originally the local police station with integral living quarters for the local officer. During the mid-20th century, many new police stations built with living accommodation, particularly in more remote areas. However with changes in the police force, these gradually fell out of use and many were converted into family homes. The police station and cell would have been located in the single-storeyed flat-roofed section on the left, while the living accommodation was in the two-storeyed section on the right.
