Scope and Content Ascog was a fairly dispersed, largely linear settlement until the mid- to late 19th century boom in building to meet the needs of the tourist trade saw Rothesay expanding to the extremities of Port Bannatyne in the north and Ascog in the south. This area became popular with wealthy Glasgow industrialists and merchants looking to set up a home from home on the island. As a result many of the dwellings here are large detached villas set in extensive grounds. Dating from the mid- to late 19th century, this asymmetrical detached house was built as the manse for the nearby United Free Church but has subsequently been converted to a private house. Despite this, it still retains many original features, including the lying-pane (horizontal) glazing to its sash and case windows throughout, including the tripartite canted bay ground floor window (right) and the small arched window between the gables at roof level. The deep-eaved gables are topped with ball-pointed timber finials, but there is little other decoration on the building. The main entrance to the former manse is on the south-east elevation (left) in a small piended projecting porch.
