Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Street, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows the former Queen's Hotel on Argyle Street, now 1-5 Marine Court. Dating from the mid-19th century, it comprises a group of three- and four-storeyed tenements, of varying styles. To the left, is a three-storeyed, four-light box bay window. In the centre is a modified, plain, three-storeyed block. On the right is a two-storeyed block with a central full-height canted bay window, and a decorative wrought-iron porch covering the entrance from the pavement. An additional attic floor with a mansard roof and arched dormers runs the full length of the building. This is one of only a few properties in this area of Rothesay which displays ornate ironwork in its porch and railings along the front boundary wall. The building was previously run as a seafront hotel, but, like many larger properties along the shore, now comprises flats, many of which are still in use for holiday accommodation.
