Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Place, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows a terrace of villa-style tenements at 14-18 Argyle Place. Dating from the early 19th century, 14 Argyle Place (left) is unusual for this area being three-storeyed-plus-attic, while the adjoining 15-18 are more typical, being two-storeyed with later extensions into the attic. All are fairly simple Classical style, with pilastered entrance doorways. 14 has been painted cream, while 15-18 have exposed stonework with painted dressings. The tenements in this group were designed to give the impression of being grand Georgian villas located directly on the seafront, but the projecting stairtowers to the rear elevations confirm that they are in fact tenements. It is likely that these properties, like most along Rothesay's shoreline would have been rented out during the peak season, and many still remain as holiday accommodation.
