Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Street, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows a four-storeyed tenement at 23 Argyle Place, which demonstrates many of the features typical to many tenements across Rothesay. The red sandstone used in their construction came from the same quarries used for many of the Glasgow tenements, often carved into decorative features on chimneystacks, around entrance doorways and moulded stringcourses between each storey. The bay windows in the outer bays of each tenement allowed residents to benefit from the light and the views available. This tenement is entered via the central arched, recessed entrance doorway. Internally, many of these tenements also have the typical Glasgow-style 'wally' tiled closes along with stained glass to some internal doors and fanlights, and decorative cast-iron balustrades to staircases. The replication of these features helped to make those visitors who came 'Doon the Watter' feel at home during their stay.
