Administrative History Tom E Gray was a navigator in Bomber Command in World War II and left the RAF in 1947 to begin a career in photography, initially photographing extensively in museums and galleries before moving to Kodak’s Professional Photography Division in 1960. His interest in history and archaeology had started as a school boy and Tom used his spare time to photograph various historic villages, buildings and industrial sites and to write articles for various magazines on everything from badgers, crafts to historic buildings. Early retirement in 1986 meant that Tom was able to travel across the country photographing Pictish stones and the quality of his work was soon recognised and sought after for publications. Tom’s collection is now digitised and available in Canmore. Known as the Tom and Sybil Gray Collection (named in memory of his wife) it spans a fifty year period from 1947 to 1998 and reflects the full range of Tom’s interests and his many talents. In 2015 he was awarded an honourary degree by Aberdeen University.
