Scope and Content Collection of photographs and drawings, plans and notes of excavations and investigations: Ferniegair burials and cists, 1936, Keil Cave, 1933-4, Roughrigg flint saw, 1941, Patrickholm cists, 1947, Cultoquhey chambered cairn, 1957, and Monzie standing stone (Witches Stone), 1958. The collection also includes earlier lantern slides from William Donnelly's excavations of a crannog at Dumbuck, on the Clyde, in 1898, of Old Kilpatrick crannog, 1898, and Auchengaich shielings, 1901. Also, papers compiled by Mr J Harrison Maxwell on archaeological sites consisting of handwritten notes with sketches, newscuttings, notebooks with information on various Scottish Roman sites, typewritten report on a bronze age cemetery at Springhill Farm, Baillieston, City of Glasgow, by J Harrison Maxwell, photographs of food vessel from cist at Springhill Farm, Baillieston, City of Glasgow, drawing of bone tool from East Anglia by J Harrison Maxwell. Photograph, by The Perthshire Advertiser, of J Harrison Maxwell examining a cup-marked rock at Connachan, Perth and Kinross. A collection of offprints of articles on archaeological subjects by J Harrison Maxwell, 1934-9. Subjects include: 'A bronze age cemetery at Springhill Farm, Baillieston, near Glasgow'; 'The vitrified fort on Eilean Buidhe, Kyles of Bute'. Bound as one volume for J N G Ritchie, 1974.

Archive History The collection comprises several accessions. The initial deposit (Acc No 1973/14) was probably received following Harrison Maxwell’s death in 1971. Subsequent accessions are: Acc No 2001/145 (Springhill and other papers, gifted by E Bruce); Acc No 2002/224 (Connachan photograph, unknown source, received prior to 1995, accessioned in retrospect) and Acc No 2005/37 (bound offprints, collected and donated by Dr J N G Ritchie, 11 April 2005).

Administrative History J Harrison Maxwell, archaeologist (d.1971), who carried out excavations of a number of sites in Argyll, around Glasgow, and in Perthshire, including: Ferniegair (1936), Keil Cave (1933-4), Patrickholm (1947), Cultoquhey (1957), and Monzie (1958).
