Scope and Content The collection comprises papers from the Department of Archaeology, Glasgow, and also its associated commercial unit, GUARD. Excavation archives comprise drawings, negatives, photographs, slides, digital media and reports. The archive documents excavations for large housing developments, wind farms, road schemes and community heritage trails. Notable projects include excavations at Hilton of Cadboll in 2001, commissioned by Historic Scotland; and along the route of the new dual carriageway A1 through East Lothian for the former Scottish Executive Trunk Roads Design and Construction Division (now Transport Scotland) between 2001 and 2007. Associated publications, A Fragmented Masterpiece: Recovering the Biography of the Hilton of Cadboll Pictish Cross-Slab and The Lands of Ancient Lothian; Interpreting the Archaeology of the A1 have since been produced.

Archive History Excavation archive material is deposited at RCAHMS by GUARD as projects are completed.

System of Arrangement Material is grouped by excavation site and organised roughly in the chronological order by which it was received.

Administrative History GUARD (Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division) was founded in 1989 and undertakes commercial contracts, research and consultancy in archaeology and heritage for industry and government, working across the UK and internationally. They provide a full range of archaeological services and products to academic standards established by the University of Glasgow. Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division ceased to accept new business from 31 December 2010.
