Archive History The Edinburgh Photographic Society held its formal inaugural meeting in 1861. The Society aimed to be accessible to the amateur of moderate means and to provide a meeting place where members could gather and discuss photographic matters including experimental practices. The society was successful in attracting a spectrum of both amateur and professional photographers to its regular meetings and excursions. In 1955 the society moved to its current premises at 68 Great King Street, where it continues to maintain facilities including a darkroom, library, and a programme of annual exhibitions, competitions, weekly meetings and outings.

System of Arrangement The photographic prints are mounted on numbered sheets, to which an alphabetical list of streets and subjects provides an index. A map of the area covered is included with the collection.

Administrative History Purchased by the Scottish National Buildings Record from the Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1947.
