Scope and Content A collection of notes, references, correspondence and photographs of sundials in Scotland.

Archive History The collection was compiled by Dr Somerville in the course of his research. After his death it was presented to RCAHMS in 2002 by Mrs A Somerville. The collection has been accessioned as Acc No 2000/201.

System of Arrangement The collection follows the original order in which it was received, grouped by the format of the sundial: obelisk, lectern, facet-headed and miscellaneous. Each group comprises folders of written material and photographs and folders of slides. A final group comprises additional non-sundial related miscellaneous material.

Administrative History Dr Andrew R Somerville (1923-90). Born in Paisley, Andrew Somerville studied organic chemistry at the University of Glasgow, from where he was awarded a doctorate, and at the universities of Zurich and Cornell. Working for ICI he was engaged in research into drug treatments for cancer, and, once more in the USA, on skin cancer. Having returned to the UK, he joined the Pharmaceuticals Division of ICS at Alderley Park, Cheshire. After retiring in 1982, Dr Somerville was able to engage in a wide range of interests, including the study of sundials, particularly those of Scotland, on which he published 'The Ancient Sundials of Scotland, Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 117 (1988). In 1989 he was once of the founder members of the British Sundial Society, of which he was the first chairman. (Source - The British Sundial Society, Dialling Miscellany, 2002/03)
