Administrative History Between 1980 and 1982 a survey of the archaeology of the Caithness coast was carried out by C E Batey and C D Morris, University of Durham. The work was commissioned by the Scottish Development Department (Ancient Monuments Branch). It started at Easter Head, Dunnet in May 1980 and finished on the Caithness/Sutherland border near Ousdale. The main aim of the work was to intensively examine the area, recording previously unrecorded sites and the condition of known monuments. The survey used two pairs of walking groups each year. Upon location of a site, its visible features were described and measured. Where a site was more complex, a plane-table survey was carried out, less complex sites were drawn-up from measurements. All sites were photographed. The final report included a gazetteer with approximate classification of sites and references to records and publications. The survey massively increased knowledge around archaeological sites in coastal Caithness, providing the foundation for other work
