Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute To the north of Achnabreck farmhouse can be found some of the most elaborate and extensive cup-and-ring carvings in Scotland. The carvings are in three groups, the largest group being spread across three separate sheets of exposed rock. Study of cup-and-ring marked stones suggests these monuments accumulated over time, and were the work of many hands. This section of markings at Achnabreck appears to be early in the sequence on this outcrop, comprising double and triple spirals. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
