Scope and Content Cup-marked rocks at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute There are three sets of cup-marked stones at Achnabreck farm inside two fenced enclosures about 140 m apart. They are covered in complex cup-marks, rings and grooves. This is a view of one of the rocks. It features one of the largest known cup-and-ring marks in Scotland at nearly 1 m in diameter - 7 rings surround a cup-mark with grooves leading from the centre. The stone is also carved with double and triple-spirals. A number of uses for such markings have been suggested, including maps, calendars, astronomical or even that they were done as acts of penance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
