Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Hill House, Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh The entrance hall of Hill House was designed by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, as part of his stylist scheme of interior decoration for the house. This striking photograph of the hall was taken in 1904 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The long hall has its walls subdivided by tall vertical strips of dark-stained pine up to door-head height, and incorporates an unusual chequered stencilled frieze. This theme of squares is echoed in the carpet, doors, chairs, table and pendant lights. Mackintosh was employed by the successful Glasgow publisher, William Blackie, to prepare a complete decorative scheme for his new house in Helensburgh. This included furniture design, stencilling, light fittings, wall and floor coverings, and ironmongery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
