Description Report: 'Rawyards, Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Archaeological evaluation'.

Date 14/11/2006

Collection Records of CFA Archaeology Ltd, archaeologists, Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland

Catalogue Number MS 4002

Category Manuscripts

Scope and Content This report (26 pages) gives the results of an archaeological evaluation commissioned by Woodford Group Ltd and undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd in October 2006 at the site of the former Boots factory site on Motherwell Road, Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, where residential housing was proposed. It was subdivided into two areas - Area A: around the site of Rawyards Farm; Area B: a parcel of undeveloped agricultural land, other than an old mine railway and mine workiing. 13 trenches (5% of available area) were excavated in Area A, 92 trenches in Area B (also 5% of available area). The evaluation established the presence of building remains on the site of Rawyards farm steading, and on the site of cottages fronting the Motherwell Road in Area A. In Area B a small section of dry stone wall was uncovered, and evidence of ground levelling work using mining waste.
