Scope and Content Aerial view of Old Town and Salisbury Crags, Edinburgh At the centre of this photograph, a number of cranes surround the site of the new Scottish Parliament building. Seen here at an early stage of development, the building's central location at the end of the Royal Mile is illustrated. Holyrood was chosen as the site of the Scottish Parliament in 1998, after a number of places around Edinburgh were considered. The other possible locations included Leith, Calton Hill and Haymarket. The Holyrood area of Edinburgh has undergone substantial redevelopment from the 1990s onwards. Once a largely industrial area, a gas holder station and brewery buildings have been replaced by a number of new structures, including the headquarters of 'The Scotsman' newspaper, visitor attractions, hotels and offices.
