C14 Radiocarbon Dating - Sample - SUERC-2098
SUERC-2098
A piece of hazel charcoal (Sample 2077) from a sealed layer 2813/4 of sand within the makeup of the henge bank. The sand overlay the peat beneath the bank, and was sealed by other layers of bank construction. The bank construction material was almost certainly upcast from digging the ditch, and it is most likely that this charcoal resulted from clearing the site of vegetation ahead of construction, although it is possible that it relates to hearth fires contemporary with construction. Monograph text says These layers represented the ‘capping’ of the bank, and produced rwo radiocarbon determinations on charcoal fragments, of 50 – 240 AD (SUERC-2097) and 120 BC – 170 AD (SUERC-2098) (both at 95.4 % probability). At this level the full extent of two of the field drains excavated in Trench F were revealed, along with a large amount of animal disturbance.
