SUERC-2096

A piece of hazel charcoal (Sample 2655(date2)) from an early Neolithic pit fill 6725, sealed by a layer of peat, and located directly beneath the henge bank. The pit was cut into sandy subsoil and filled with sandy soil. It contained a rich artefact assemblage, including sherds from several vessels, flints, and a flake from a stone axe. The backfilling of the pit was deliberate and if the fragments of charcoal and nut shell were from firewood, it is unlikely that they were very old when they entered this matrix.
