C14 Radiocarbon Dating - Sample - SUERC-10853
SUERC-10853
Sample CH06#60 Context 928 Midden layer 928 in Area C (the midden and double roundhouse northwest of the main excavation). Deposit of black peat ash forming a midden layer at the base of the upper midden sequence. It lies on top of a deep deposit of clean windblown sand (1050), and is sealed by a layer of white sand (927). A radiocarbon date of 1400-995 cal BC (Ox-A-3352; 3010 ± 75 BP) was obtained in 1989 from disarticulated animal bone from 928. Site Phase 9. The carbonised barley grain is most likely to have been deposited as the result of activities elsewhere on the settlement (perhaps from within a house beyond the excavated area) in which material became charred from contact with the hearth fire. From there it was presumably tipped onto this midden. Very little time is likely to have elapsed between the seed's charring and its incorporation into the archaeological context of the midden.
