Nothing is known of this church beyond that it was pre-Reformation and was demolished in 1782 (when the present church was built).

Name Book 1856

Some slight amorphous mounds at the site may represent foundations [of the old parish church] but no building outline can be determined.

A stone date 1644, built into the modern vestry of the present church (at NY 0356 7822) came from the old manse, now a hotel (at NY 0341 7836) (J Keillor, The Manse, Mousewald).

This church was probably originally established between 1180 and 1220. It is known to have been embellished by William Carlisle who lived from 1418-62. Stones from the old church attributable to this period were discovered at Torthorwald Manse when it was converted into a hotel (A E Truckell, Dumfries Museum).

The dog-tooth ornament, stone recessed for a figurine, and black-letter frieze, all from Torthorwald Church, and now in Dumfries Museum, date to around 1460.

Torthorwald (Glasgow, Nithsdale). An independent parsonage in Bagimond, the church may be identified with that of 'Toethocalde', of which the abbey of Holyrood were allegedly patrons in 1264. Before 1504, however, the parsonage had become annexed to Fail, one of whose brethren normally appears to have served the vicarage.
