Archaeology Notes

NX98SW 68 c. 919 846

For nearby crannog (NX 9189 8465), see NX98SW 1.

In 1879 Munro examined a 'canoe' in Dr Grierson's Museum at Thornhill. It had been revealed by drainage operations about 60 yards (55m) from the crannog or 'island' in Friar's Carse and was found 'deeply imbedded' in the mud at a depth of about 4' (1.2m).

Friar's Carse farmsteading is situated at NX 9254 8499 and a crannog (NX98SW 1) is noted in Carse Loch at NX 9189 8465. The local topography is cultivated clayland at an altitude of about 30m OD.

On discovery, the boat probably measured about 22' (6.7m) in length and 2'10" (0.9m) in beam, indicating a slenderness coefficient of about 7.8. The bow had been formed from the root end of the tree and the stern was closed by a transom, making it of dissimilar-ended form.

No subsequent record of this boat can be found.

R Munro 1882; R Simpson 1896; R J C Mowat 1996.
