Archaeology Notes

NX29SW 20 2231 9314

A road established in the early 19th century for wheeled vehicles from Tormitchell quarry south-westwards out of the survey area. The carriageway is 2.5 to 3m wide and has been engineered to provide uniform shallow gradients. It has ditches in poorly-drained areas, and there is limited evidence of metalling (small angular rubble). There are small quarries beside the road at intervals. The road is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 25" map (1855).

The road can be traced for most of its route although it has been washed away where it crosses streams and gullies; no original bridges or culverts were located. The section at Auchenmady has been repaired recently as part of a farm track, but the remainder is abandoned and unusable.

Visited May 1993.

S Carter 1993; NMRS, MS/738/1.
