Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Medieval records show that Roxburgh had three hospitals, one of these being dedicated to St Peter. Although little is known about St Peter's hospital, a charter appears to suggest it was founded in the second half of the thirteenth century, during the reign of Alexander III.

Documentary evidence suggests that medieval hospitals usually served a wide variety of functions. Often they were places where travellers could find shelter, and they might also care for the 'sick', a term that could cover the old, lunatics, the poor and even lepers.
