Archaeology Notes

NT61SE 8 6802 1208.

NT 680 120 There is a round cairn, 12ft in diameter and 2ft high, in the strip of plantation that runs SSE from Edgerston fort (NT61SE 2), and a quarter of a mile NW of the manse. The cairn was opened in 1932 and was found to be surrounded by a stone kerb.

No further details of the excavation are recorded, but the finds - two flint knives and fragments of a Food Vessel - have been presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS). (PSAS 1949 Donations).

RCAHMS 1956.

The cairn, at NT 6802 1208, is now irregular and grass- covered, and measures c 6.0m E-W x 5.0m N-S x 0.7m high.

Mr W Renwick of Camphouse, Camptown, Roxburghshire, was present at the excavation in 1932, which was conducted by his father, and believes this to be the only cairn on the farm (see also NT61SE 3).

Visited by OS(RD) 16 February 1967.
