(NT 1444 7749) Stone Coffin (NR)

OS 6" map (1856)

For many years a large stone coffin has lain a few feet S of the main (S) entrance to Dalmeny church. Made from a single block of sandstone, it measures externally 7'7" long, 2'4" wide at the shoulders, tapering to 1'9" wide at the foot, and 1'6" deep. The head is shaped, and the sides, except one, are covered in much-weathered carvings. In 1914, the sculptured lid was missing, but it is mentioned in the New Statistical Account (NSA 1845), which also notes that "It was found near to its present position, in digging a grave for the Stewarts of Craigie." The finding of the coffin under the ground may mean that, at some time of church repairing it was buried to save it from injury, or because it was found to be in the way. Clearly it was never intended to be placed under the ground, as its elaborate sculpturings show, but to be set against a wall (one plain side) probably in the interior of the chancel.

Radford dates the coffin to the late 12th century.

A Reid 1915; C A R Radford 1964

This coffin, without its lid, is as described.
