The Gas House, Ballikinrain, by Balfron
The property is located to the N of the B818 Balfron to Fintry Road. The gas house is accessed by a drive to the E of the entrance drive to Old Ballikinrain, behind the gatehouse. The building sits in a walled courtyard. The W and N walls are blind, forming a boundary with an adjoining field. The walls are of ashlar red sandstone blocks. The building was in agricultural use on the date of visit. There was no surviving plant.
This gas producing plant was unusual in that it used oil and not coal. Oil was more expensive but produced fifty percent more illumination by volume than coal. There was also a plentiful supply of wood from the estate (coppiced and made into charcoal) which provided the fuel for heating the retorts.
