In 1781 foundation work revealed a logboat on the N side of Glasgow Cross, about 410m NNE of the present river bank and in a substratum of laminated clay. The depth of the discovery is nowhere recorded, but the area is situated at an altitude of 32' (9.8m) OD in the upper river terraces.
The Tontine Hotel was built in about 1737-60 and stood next to the former tolbooth which was redesigned in 1814. What became the Tontine Building was acquired by the Tontine Society in 1781 and the logboat was presumably found during subsequent reconstruction works.
