Archaeology Notes

NO89SE 2 c. 85 91.

A hoard of denarii, ranging from Vespasian (69 AD) to Septimius Severus (211 AD), was found about 3' below the surface on Cowie Common in 1843. They had the appearance of having been contained in an earthen vessel, although no remains of this were found.

Miss Robertson (1952) believes that three coins in the British Museum, registered as having come from "Blackburn of Muchall" ( ? Backburn), are part of this hoard. Others to whom the coins were distributed included the Newcastle Soc of Antiqs and the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), which received three in 1846.

G Macdonald 1918; A S Robertson 1952.
