(Area NO 360 228) The present farm of Grange is the site of a grange (of Balmerino Abbey) the lands of which were divided into two estates after the Reformation. The W half was named New Grange and, in a charter of 1572 concerning it, mention is made of a principal 'house pr hall' Campbell believed that this was a house of some pretension probably built as the residence of the master of the grange. It continued to be the mansion house of the Balfours at least until 1686. About 40 years ago (about 1859) an old granary was demolished which might have been part of the ancient grange. This granary may have been the long roofless building shown on the 6-inch map of 1855-66 at NO 3600 2282.

Information received from a member of the public:
The archaeology notes in the current entry state that the grange was divided after the Reformation, with the W half being named 'New Grange'. There is a reference to Newgrange in a tack of teinds issued by the Abbot of Balmerino in 1551 (National Records of Scotland, GD137/2269, Scrymgeour Wedderburn of Wedderburn papers), suggesting that the division occurred no later than this date, rather than after the Reformation.
