Archaeology Notes

NO01NE 90 0146 1695

The remains of this mill dam and pond, which fed water via a lade to a mill at Kildinny steading (NO01NE 43), are situated in a natural hollow between Long Plantation to the W and an un-named wood to the E. The dam measures 34m in length from NE to SW by about 7m in maximum thickness and 1.8m in height. No sluice mechanism is visible, but the central section of the dam contains a culvert, and is faced with stone on either side.

The pond is fed by a natural spring which is depicted as a well on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet cix, 1866). The dam was built sometime after that date, but it had already been abandoned by 1901, when it is only partly depicted on the 2nd edition of the map (Perthshire, sheet cix.NE), the area of the pond being shown as rough ground.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 22 November 1995.
