(NN 8387 0980) Chapel (NR) (Site of).
OS 6" map, (1958)
See also NN80NW 3.
The site of the chapel at Ardoch as authorised by the OS in preference to the site within the Roman fort where a chapel was actually proved by excavation (See NN80NW 3). The surveyors were aware of the fort site but 'all living authorities' disagreed with it and preferred the site at NN 8387 0980 (known to them as Chapel Hill); the walls of a chapel were 'remembered by many persons about the neighbourhood.' Further, Roy's plan (Christison 1898) shows a cryptic feature at this spot, and another tradition of a chapel outside the fort is recorded.
Name Book 1863; D Christison 1898.
There is no evidence of a chapel at the site shown on the OS plan. However, about 7.0m. to the south are the slight remains of a grass-covered, stone wall, possibly the SE angle and part of the south wall of a building or enclosure (but see NN80NW 3 for more probable site).
No further information.
Visited by OS (E G C) 25 August 1967.
The cited location of this chapel falls immediately S of the Roman fort NN80NW 10, and within the Scheduled area of the 'Ardoch, Roman military complex 900m NNE of Ardoch Bridge...'
