Archaeology Notes

NM 414 542. Sundial, Quinish House: a dial-head of 17th century date stands on a modern pedestal 40m of the 19th century mansion of Quinish. It comprises a 0.31m cube of grey sandstone carrying a wedge-shaped projection 0.15m in height into which a gnomon is fixed.

Alternate faces of the lower block are ornamented with heart-shaped recesses and with circular hollows crossed by diagonal bars, and the N and S faces are inscribed respectively with the date 1688 and the initals MCC. The provenance of this object is unknown, although it is probably of Scottish origin.

The sundial is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Argyllshire, Island of Mull 1882, sheet lii).
