Archaeology Notes

NK04NE 12.03 0752 4630

The Battle HQ for Peterhead airfield is situated in a field to the S of the southern perimeter.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) April 1999

The 'Battle HQ' is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 109, 3014-3015, flown 23 May 1946), about 80m NE of East Thunderton farmsteading. All that is visible on the photographs is a small square structure with the line of a cable trench running in from the minor road to the SE. A vertical air photograph of a later date (OS 69 176, 060, flown 6 June 1969, shows that the earth covering has been removed from the structure.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), November 2004

Located on high ground to the south of the A950 and north of West Thunderton farm. The bunker is in very poor condition, the emergency hatch is still in place but the emergency ladder is missing. The main entrance steps have been backfilled and the bunker is flooded to between 7 and 8 feet, further investigation was not possible due to site conditions.
