(NJ 1424 5758) Corn Mill (NR)

OS 6" map, (1959)

The ruins of the Priory Mill adjoin the Prior's Lodge (NJ15NW 1.2) A stone water course along the south side of the Priory may be the lade.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1896-7; P F Anson 1959.

All that remains of this building is the W and part of the S walls located against the S precinct wall some 12.0m E of the Prior's Lodging. The footings of a wall running from the E wall of the prior's lodging to the W wall of this building can still be traced. The stone-lined water course, mentioned above, runs through the centre of the building in an W to E direction, where, according to MacPhail, an axle was once visible although there is now no trace of it.

Father Edmund doubts if this was ever a mill - the water course being a drain to flush water from the rere-dorter, which he thinks this building was (Information from Father Edmund, Pluscarden Priory).

Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (R B), 7 September 1965; S R MacPhail nd.
