Archaeology Notes

HY41SW 135.16 centred 4338 1209

Nothing could be seen in a field between Hatston Cottages and Hatston Farm of a group of Nissen and other types of huts visible on WW II RAF vertical air photographs (NLA 16, 616-617, flown 22 June 1941). The camp was expanded during the war as vertical air photographs taken in 1946, (CPE/Scot/UK 188, 4174-4175, flown 10 October 1946), show that the camp extended eastwards to a sharp bend in the track leading to the centre of the airfield.

The site is now partially occupied by a small postwar housing estate (Hatston Cottages) and Hatston Farm (HY41SW 149).

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), August 1999
